Successful Single Parenting

Single parents experience both the joy of children and the unique challenges of raising them single-handed. The problems single parents face can include most, if not all, the difficulties experienced by couples. Since separating from her boyfriend of six years at the beginning of 2008 she has been parenting five-year-old Lily on her own. “The first three months were really tough,” explains Claire. “I took a new job at a clinic far from Lily’s day-care because I needed the money. My break-up with Blake was still real raw and I was stressed out from working long hours.” The strain of working a new job far away soon took toll not only affecting Claire but little Lily as well. Teachers at Lily’s playschool contacted Claire about Lily’s noticeable change of character, her changes in behaviour and picky eating habits. “Lily became withdrawn and angry, whereas previously she would happily play with the other kids at day-care. She also refused any food that wasn’t prepared by me.” Getting Professional Help Claire took Lily to a child psychologist who identified Lily’s behaviour. Lily was displaying signs of abandoned child syndrome. Claire and Lily worked with a therapist to devise a strategy of abandoned child single parenting. Abandoned child single parenting requires commitment, care and attention. The first step it to identify whether your child may be experiencing feelings of abandonment and neglect. This may be indicated by his or her withdrawal from social activities and hostility towards those around them. Your child may be clingy and insecure. Further indication of abandoned child syndrome includes depression, irregular sleeping and eating patterns. In a single parent household, the adult and child may have unresolved issues relating to a divorce, separation or other form of abandonment. Abandoned child single parenting is especially challenging. With effort and commitment, however, the single parent can, like Claire, learn skills to positively parent. It is possible to achieve effective abandoned child single parenting. “Lily is doing great. She looks forward to her weekly play therapy sessions,” reports Claire. “Therapy has made a great difference. Lil’ is more sociable than ever.”
